Affective Beginnings: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues in Teacher Education

This project investigates the affective atmosphere beginning teachers face as they think and talk about LGBT issues in and out of the classroom. Grounded in critical studies of education and the literatures on teacher education and the “affective turn” in the social sciences, the study will consider how beginning teachers navigate, cross, assert, and defend geographic, discursive, and affective boundaries by examining five faculties of education in Canada, Australia, and the United States and in constituencies with varying degrees of social and legal recognition and protection of LGBT rights and relationships. The study will help faculties of education better prepare teachers to facilitate the inquiry, curiosity, and participation necessary to an education that respects LGBT rights, recognizes distinct local and national conditions, and contributes broadly to a just world.
