A critical area of research in mathematics education continues to be that of developing pedagogy that will at once raise levels of achievement and engagement. A common approach to meeting these goals is to teach with ‘context problems’ – that is, problems that situate the mathematics in a ‘real-world’ scenario. This project seeks to explore teachers’ evolving understanding of mathematics embedded in social justice context problems and the influence of this understanding on their views of teaching and learning.
