York’s Faculty of Education offers consecutive teacher education programs at various on- and off-campus locations in the GTA and surrounding area. Not all certification levels are offered at all sites. Teacher candidates in the Intermediate/Senior certification level are required to commute to Keele campus one day per week for their teaching subject courses.
Although applicants may identify their top two site choices, York’s Faculty of Education will assign applicants to sites with no guarantee that requests to change sites can be accommodated. We strongly urge applicants to research the sites as much as possible so that prior to accepting our offer of admission, they are aware of the commute related to the site to which they have been assigned. There is no option to switch sites once the application deadline has lapsed.
Sites are subject to change depending on availability of facilities and practicum placements. The site locations (some of which are housed in schools) should not be mistaken as the locations for practicum placements.
The Consecutive Program is administered by York University’s Keele Campus; however, courses are offered at various sites.
The Barrie site is located on the Georgian College campus, 1 Georgian Drive, and is available to teacher candidates pursuing the Primary/Junior or Junior/Intermediate certification levels. The site offers practicum placements with Simcoe County Board of Education and Simcoe Muskoka Catholic Board of Education. In celebration of the culture and traditions of the land where we are teaching, the Barrie Site offers an Infusion of Indigenous Education across the curriculum and a course that studies Issues in Indigenous Education. Barrie Site teacher candidates have an opportunity to participate in a one-week practicum experience in a First Nation, Métis or Inuit school, or a classroom that reflects teachings in Indigenous culture and tradition.
The CEC site is located at the Toronto Catholic District School Board office building and is available to teacher candidates for all three certification levels (Primary/Junior, Junior/Intermediate, and Intermediate/Senior). This site is for candidates who are Catholic and have discerned that they wish to teach in Catholic schools. The practicum placements are solely within the Toronto Catholic District School Board. Candidates at other sites can request placement in a Catholic board in their region.
Currently hosted at the Keele campus, the ECE program for full-time consecutive Primary/Junior applicants offers a modified curriculum with courses such as Integrated Fine Arts, Literacy and Culture, and Inclusive Education.
