Eligibility, Prerequisites & Documents Required
(FACE-TO-FACE, PARTIAL ON-LINE AND ON-LINE AQs)
Candidates are responsible for ensuring they satisfy eligibility prerequisites prior to applying.
Admission Requirements to all Programs (±)
(please read all information pertaining to your program or section):
Primary Basic, Junior Basic, Intermediate Basic (Dramatic Arts), Intermediate Basic (Health & Physical Education), Intermediate Basic (Religious Education) (±)
- You must hold an undergraduate degree acceptable to the OCT AND
- You must be a member in good standing with the OCT.
- See note regarding language proficiency.
Intermediate Basic (English, Geography, History and Science) (±)
- You must hold an undergraduate degree acceptable to the OCT AND
- You must be a member in good standing with the OCT AND
- You must hold two full university degree credit courses in subject
- See note regarding language proficiency.
Intermediate Basic (Mathematics) (±)
- You must hold an undergraduate degree acceptable to the OCT AND
- You must be a member in good standing with the OCT AND
- You must hold two full university degree credit courses in mathematics; OR,
- You must successfully complete a mathematics proficiency test (see below for details regarding the test date and location).

Senior Basic (English, History, Science) (±)
- You must hold an undergraduate degree acceptable to the OCT AND
- You must be a member in good standing with the OCT AND
- You must hold five full university degree credit courses in the subject.

Senior Basic (Health & Physical Education) (±)
- You must hold an undergraduate degree acceptable to the OCT AND
- You must be a member in good standing with the OCT AND
- You must hold two full university degree credit courses Health & Physical Education; OR,
- Proof of relevant coaching experience sufficiently documented AND
- See note regarding language proficiency.
Honour Specialist (any subject) (±)
- An undergraduate degree acceptable to the Ontario College of Teachers; AND
- Be a member in good standing with the OCT;
- You must have a four-year (20 full course) academic undergraduate degree, (excluding education courses);
- Your must have NINE full courses (non-education) in the subject of the Honour specialist, with a minimum B average;
- Official transcript(s) sent directly to the Field Development Office;
- An appropriately signed Supervisory Officer's Form verifying a minimum of two years of successful teaching experience, subsequent to certification and prior to the beginning of the class, including at least one year in the subject of the Honour Specialist.
Part 1 of: Integration of Information & Computer Technology, Cooperative Education, Dance, Drama, Design & Technology, ESL, Environmental Science, Family Studies, Guidance and Career Education, Librarianship, Media, Multiculturalism in Education, Reading, Science and Technology, Special Education, Visual Arts (±)
- You must be a member in good standing with the OCT.

Part 1 of: Kindergarten, Primary Education (±)
- You must hold an undergraduate degree acceptable to the OCT AND
- You must be a member in good standing with the OCT AND
- You must hold a Basic Qualification for the Primary Division.
Part 1 of: Junior Education (±)
- You must hold an undergraduate degree acceptable to the OCT AND
- You must be a member in good standing with the OCT AND
- You must hold a Basic Qualification for the Junior Division.
Part 1 of: Intermediate Education (±)
- You must hold an undergraduate degree acceptable to the OCT AND
- You must be a member in good standing with the OCT AND
- You must hold a Basic Qualification for the Intermediate Division.
Part 1 of: French As A Second Language (±)
- You must hold an undergraduate degree acceptable to the OCT AND
- You must be a member in good standing with the OCT AND
- You must successfully complete a French language proficiency test* (see below for details regarding the test date and location).
*Test Exemption: Applicants holding Basic Qualifications for teaching in Francophone schools (i.e, primaire, moyen, intermédiare, and/or supérieur will not be required to complete the French language proficiency test).
Part 1 of: Health & Physical Education, Mathematics Education and Vocal Music (P/J) (±)
- You must hold an undergraduate degree acceptable to the OCT AND
- You must be a member in good standing with the OCT AND
- You must hold a Basic Qualification for the Primary or Junior Division.
Part 1 of: Health & Physical Education (I/S) (±)
- You must hold an undergraduate degree acceptable to the OCT AND
- You must be a member in good standing with the OCT AND
- You must hold a Basic Qualification for the Intermediate or Senior Division.
All Part 2 Programs (±)
- You must hold an undergraduate degree acceptable to the OCT AND
- You must be a member in good standing with the OCT AND
- You must hold the corresponding Part 1 AQ; AND,
- You must have completed one year of successful teaching experience (as verified by a Supervisory Officer's Form) between the time you received your teaching certification and the start of the program to which you are applying.
All Part 3 (Specialist) Programs (±)
- You must hold an undergraduate degree acceptable to the OCT AND
- You must be a member in good standing with the OCT AND
- You must hold the corresponding Part 2 AQ; AND,
- You must have completed two years of successful teaching experience (as verified by a Supervisory Officer's Form), including one year in the area to which application is being made, between the time you received your teaching certification and the start of the program to which you are applying.
* Language Proficiency Note: If you hold a letter of evaluation issued by the OCT and the letter does not specifically state that you satisfy the OCT's language proficiency requirement, you must satisfy the Cooperative's language proficiency requirement. Applicants are responsible for the cost of the language proficiency test. Test costs may vary. For more information on all acceptable ESL proficiency tests please go to OCT English Language Information.
Required Documents / Eligibility Verification (±)
- You hold an OCT issued letter of evaluation:
- You must submit a photocopy of the entire letter of evaluation.
- English language proficiency test results, if required, must be sent directly to the Office of Research and Field Development from the testing institution.
- You are applying to Intermediate Basic (English) or (Mathematics)* :
- You must arrange for official transcripts to be mailed directly to the Office of Research and Field Development from the institution through which you completed the prerequisite university course work.
- You are applying to a Senior Basic (any subject) :
- You must arrange for official transcripts to be mailed directly to the Office of Research and Field Development from the institution through which you completed the prerequisite university course work.
- You are applying to an Honour Specialist (any subject):
- You must arrange for official transcripts to be mailed directly to the Office of Research and Field Development from the institution through which you completed the prerequisite university course work.
- You are applying to a Part 2 program:
- You must submit a fully completed and appropriately signed Supervisory Officer's Form verifying your teaching experience.
- You are applying to a Part 3 (Specialist) program:
- You must submit a fully completed and appropriately signed Supervisory Officer's Form verifying your teaching experience.
*Note: Transcripts are not required if you will be completing the math proficiency test.
*With the exception of candidates holding a letter of evaluation, we must be able to obtain your certification records from the OCT's Public Register to verify proof of degrees and/or AQs/ABQs.
All prerequisites must be completed prior to the start of any session and must appear on the Public Register within six weeks of the start of the session.
Non-refundable test fee: $50 fee in addition to course tuition,
The mathematics proficiency test is completed online and is comprised of a timed multiple choice set of questions.
Upon registration, applicants will be notified of test details by email.
Applicants who do not successfully complete the test will be ineligible for admission to the course. A minimum grade of 60% (C) must be obtained to be considered successful. All test results are final and not subject to appeal.
Ineligible applicants can opt to:
- Transfer to an alternate course (subject to eligibility and space availability); OR,
- Cancel the application to receive a full refund of fees paid, less the non-refundable test and registration fee amounts.

Test Anxiety?
The Intermediate Basic Mathematics course requires either the prerequisite university Math courses or successful completion of an equivalency assessment. We recognize that for many of you, it has been a considerable time since you wrote a Math test. The Intermediate Basic Mathematics Tutorial gives an overview of the Intermediate Basic Mathematics course content and is a brief preparation for the test itself.
The learning experiences in both the on-line and face-to-face formats in Intermediate Mathematics are structured to develop understanding of both the subject content as well as teaching strategies for adolescent learners. Some knowledge of intermediate mathematics is required in order to be successful with these learning experiences.
This tutorial is a sample test that is intended to be completed in one hour. Print the PDF "Question" file, complete the multiple choice tutorial then view/print the "Answer" pdf file and compare. Candidates are required to demonstrate proficiency by achieving 60% on the Mathematics test.
