Inquiry (±)

This unique element of our program is a teacher inquiry project that allows you to explore questions of direct interest related to your own teaching and learning. You are asked to be curious and look critically and reflectively at your own practice. You are encouraged to seek out and try fresh ideas and to discover explicit links between your learning and your students learning.

The 60-hour focused time devoted to this activity comprises the full teacher inquiry project:

  • deciding on an interest;
  • formulating a question based on teaching/learning in your classroom;
  • making a study plan;
  • examining the best current practice/research;
  • gathering data;
  • keeping a journal of your journey;
  • interacting with your Instructional Leader and colleagues; and,
  • presenting the story of your discoveries.

Exploring questions about classroom practice can ultimately lead to increased understanding of the subject area and the management of change. Candidates who do not have access to a classroom or who take summer programs will, with the assistance of their instructional leaders, be able to modify the inquiry.

Online Course Timelines (±)

Courses will run over a 12 week period if it is taken during the regular school year. In that timeframe, about 5 hours of participation is required per week for the course content. If this course is taken during the summer, it will run over a 4 week period, with approximately 16 hours of participation required per week for the course content. In addition, 60 hours of classroom based inquiry project will be conducted alongside the core course. Remember to participate more frequently for short periods rather than less often for long periods.
