Professional Development Program - July 2012


Travel, teach and experience teaching and learning in schools in China during this four week professional development program!

Who:
Program open to practicing Canadian teachers and school administrators and to students in Faculties of Education across Canada. Concurrent students in York’s Faculty of Education can also count this experience towards the Specialization in International Education! Current York Faculty of Education students are eligible for a $500 bursary from York International.

When: June 30 to July 26, 2012

Included: Course instructor and class-based activities, accommodation on campuses, transportation from airport and between cities, school placements, health insurance, cultural activities.

The program consists of: lectures from speakers who are leaders in education in China; two individual one-week teaching observation/placements in two public schools, located in two different Chinese cities; visits to a vocational school and post-secondary institutions; activities and assignments that will help to explore cultural norms and expectations regarding education in China. Cities visited will include: Nanjing, Suzhou, Yancheng and Shanghai.

At the end of the program, participants will be awarded with a professional development certificate in Education, Teaching and Culture in China. Current students in York University's Faculty of Education are eligible to apply for a $500 bursary to help them offset the cost of this program.

Shanghai
Host to the 2011 World Expo, Shanghai is known by some as the “Paris of Asia” and is a cosmopolitan global city in finance, fashion, commerce and technology.

Nanjing
The capital of Jiangsu province and one of the most prosperous in all of China, Nanjing has vast historical and economic significance. It is a hub for silk, textiles, printing and shipbuilding. 

Suzhou
This major city is known as the “garden city” for all of its public and historic gardens has ancient roots. Home to two UNESCO Heritage Sites, it boasts a combination of history and modernity.

Yangzhou
Located on the Yangtze River, and the city where Marco Polo was once a municipal official, Yangzhou has traditionally been one of China’s wealthiest cities and is now a centre for tourism.
