The following is a list of terms that are used in the Faculty of Education
- Additional Qualification (AQ) Courses
Accredited professional development courses for teachers who are members of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT).
Additional Qualification courses allow teachers to expand their knowledge and skills within the divisions and subjects in which they are already qualified or to acquire knowledge in new subject areas.

- Additional Basic Qualification (ABQ) Courses
Accredited professional development courses for teachers who are members of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT). Additional Basic Qualifications courses allow teachers to add another division or general studies subject area to what they are already qualified to teach. ABQ courses can prepare teachers to teach students at the primary, junior, intermediate or senior level. They can also provide English or French-speaking teachers with the skills to work in the other language

- Exchange Program
An exchange program allows a student to study at another university for a set period of time — generally one term to one year. Students plan a program of study that will allow them to earn transfer credits towards their York degree while paying tuition at York and studying in another country. York University has a number of exchange agreements with universities around the world.
In the Faculty of Education, students in the concurrent program can participate in an exchange program.
- Faculty Exchange Program
Similar to an exchange program for students, a faculty exchange includes "trading" faculty members between two universities for a set period of time — often during the summer term.
- Globalization
A global movement to increase the flow of goods, services, people, real capital, and money across national borders in order to create a more integrated and interdependent world economy.
- Interactive Graduate Colloquia
Graduate students whose research is in international and comparative education are invited to speak at regularly-scheduled events. All graduate students are invited to attend and participate in discussions at these events. These events are supported by both the International Education office and the Graduate Programs office. Deadlines for application are not specifically set.
- International Advisory Group (IAG)
The International Advisory Group (IAG) is a voluntary group of Faculty of Education faculty members that meets once a month in order to discuss upcoming events and activities and to advise on the actions, directions and projects of the International Education office.
- International Education
The International Education office in the Faculty of Education works with incoming and outgoing international students and faculty members, and that facilitates faculty-wide international projects. The office is supported by the International Advisory Group (IAG) in ensuring that faculty members are consulted and that many considerations are made before a final decision is arrived at.
- Internationalization
Internationalization is defined as a process of integrating international and/or intercultural knowledge and perspectives within the teaching, research and service functions of a university. Often it is considered to be a response to the forces of economic, social and cultural change known as "globalization". Internationalization often translates into providing students with opportunities for gaining international experience and for developing the international and intercultural knowledge, skills and attitudes to function effectively in the world.
- International Practicum Placement (IPP)
Consecutive students in the Faculty of Education are able to apply to participate in this opportunity; once they have completed their classroom hours for their Ontario Teaching Certificate, they will be able to complete their final one-month teaching block in a school in an international location. Spaces are limited, and a competitive application process is to be anticipated, including an interview process.
- International Summer Internship
During the summer, concurrent students participate in an internship in another country. Opportunities vary, from school teaching to environmental fieldwork, and placements are available to students across the entire university. This opportunity is available to Faculty of Education students through York International. Spaces are limited, and a competitive application process is to be anticipated, including an interview process.
- Learning from the Past, Teaching for the Future
Learning from the Past, Teaching for the Future is a special program that is offered to concurrent students through the Canadian Centre for German and European Studies (CCGES) at York with support from the Faculty of Education. Students who are accepted into this program participate over a two-year period. They participate with students from partner universities in Germany and Poland, and take a credit course in combination with a number of educational travel experiences related to Holocaust education. Deadlines for application will be posted, and may not be on a yearly basis.
- Study Abroad Program
Study Abroad programs are one-way exchange opportunities to earn credits at another university as a part of their York University degrees. Tuition may be paid to York or the host institution, depending on the nature of the institutional agreement. This type of opportunity is open to students in the concurrent program in the Faculty of Education, and will likely include earning some credits for the other concurrent degree program.
Students who are enrolled in programs such as the Jewish Teacher Education Program are able to apply to study for up to three terms in a University in Israel. Similar to an exchange program, students will take classes that pertain to their degrees and earn credits at the partner university.
Deadlines for application usually take place in January/February, but please check with your program leader for confirmation on details.
- Summer Institute
Graduate Programs-sponsored courses and colloquia that showcase invited internationally renowned scholars from different universities and their research.
Summer Institute professors teach a summer course and speak at the Summer Institute colloquia in the Faculty of Education at York University.
- Partner University
A university that has a signed agreement of cooperation with York University.
- Pre-service Program
A program for undergraduate students who are working towards a Bachelor of Education degree in the Faculty of Education.
- Principals' Qualification Program (PQP)
The Principals' Qualification Program consists of two courses and a practical assignment, and it is open to members of the Ontario College of Teachers (OCT). Upon completion, the candidates are qualified to apply for positions as principals in the province of Ontario.

- Professional Development Program for International Teaching and Administration Professionals
A professional development course that is contracted through the International Education office in the Faculty of Education by an international partner university, government body, school district, etc. in order to provide professional development to teachers, school administrators or professors. Programs may take place on the York campus or in an international location, as appropriate. Programs are non-credit at York University, but they may be recognized at the home institution as appropriate.

Specialization Option in International Education:
Students registered in York University’s Concurrent Education program can now participate in this specialization option as a part of their regular Bachelor of Education (BEd) program. In order to qualify for this Specialization Option, students must complete all of the following:
- Complete elective courses that have an international focus
- Complete an international learning opportunity through York University (including an internship, exchange program, or other international teaching-based program)
- Complete a minimum of 32 hours of co-curricular experience with an international focus
- Visiting Doctoral Candidate
A student enrolled in a PhD program at a credentialed university who has completed the application process, including being sponsored by a Faculty of Education faculty member, and has Visiting Scholars Committee approval. Visiting Doctoral Candidates must have their own funding in place, and will conduct research under a professor who has agreed to mentor them.
- Visiting Scholar
Scholars who are on are on leave from their credentialed home university and whose applications the Faculty of Education's Visiting Scholars Committee has accepted. Visiting Scholars must be have their own funding in place, and will conduct research under a professor who has agreed to mentor them.
