Professor Abdi Samatar's presentation, based on a recently published book of the same title, will look at the story of Africa’s First Democratic leaders during the first three decades of independence (1957-1991). Much of the studies on African post-colonial leadership have been centered on what an earlier book termed “Personal Rule in Black Africa.” Africa’s First Democrats takes a contrasting tack by examining the development of an authentic and homegrown African democratic leadership and their efforts to rebuild the post-colonial state to reflect the hopes and essence of liberation. The presentation will reflect on the lessons Somalis and Africans might learn from this unique political practice.
The event will include a book signing.
