This course begins with an introduction to the medical and social models of disability and how these constructs frame discussions of education and (re)habilitation for students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing (D/HH). The course then reviews the socio-cultural, historical, and political factors unique to this field. Next, it develops an understanding of how such factors affect children who are D/HH in the spheres of family life, education, communication. The course then studies the ways in which these children develop personal and social identities based on their hearing status. This is followed by an introduction to Deaf community and culture. The course concludes with a consideration of what the future holds for deaf and hard of hearing students and their families.
