Bilingual Bicultural Education

This course provides an entry-level orientation to the philosophy, theory, pedagogy and history of Deaf bilingual/bicultural education (BiBi education). This course is about incorporating both American Sign Language and English as languages of education and information on the unique cultural and cross-cultural experiences and values of Deaf, hearing, and "in-between" people as part of deaf children and youths' educational experiences.

The teacher candidates will learn and become aware of differences and similarities between English and ASL-English centered educational models and approaches, as well as with some research on such models. They will learn to incorporate, as part of their teaching/learning activities, the importance of fostering positive interrelationship between/among family members, school personnel and people in the community, including those who are Deaf and hard of hearing.
