The September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows organization demonstrates ways that grief and public remembrance can inform peace-able responses to global conflicts. But does the organization’s “high-profile” status as families who lost loved ones on 9/11 obscure the suffering of others touched by “lesser-known” historical traumas? Butler’s (2004) theorization of grief, mourning, and shared vulnerability and Rothberg’s (2009) concept of “multi-directional memory” will be considered in an assessment of the organization’s peace work and framing of 9/11 as “a teachable moment”.
