International Education

media release

The Faculty of Education offers students in the Concurrent Bachelor of Education program the opportunity to specialize in International Education. This option responds to students' interests in teaching in international locations after they have graduated with a BEd and will help to prepare teacher candidates to teach in diverse classroom settings locally. The specialization will be offered within the existing Concurrent BEd degree offerings and requirements. To satisfy the experience required in the program, teacher candidates will complete activities in each of the following categories during the degree program: coursework; experiential teaching/learning experience; and co-curricular experience. Participation in the specialization will require students identify this as an area of specialization prior to graduating with their Education degree. Upon confirmation from the International Education office, information will be directed to the undergraduate student services office in the Faculty of Education and a notation will be added to the students' transcripts, indicating that a specialization has been completed. It is hoped that the transcript notation will help our graduates gain recognition for this series of experiences that they have pursued during their BEd degrees.

The specialization in International Education will guide students in tailoring their degrees with the strategic selection of elective courses, extracurricular activities, and participation in international learning opportunities that will help them to enhance their knowledge, skills and experiences, which are required for success in an international teaching environment. It will also potentially enhance students' engagement in their existing degrees, since the skills and experiences gained through a deepened understanding of international issues and education systems will be beneficial in international work and in Ontario's diverse multicultural classrooms.
