Graduation Awards

The Alan S. Berg Jewish Studies Award In Memory of Louie Kamien (±)

This annual award of $250.00 will be made to a teacher candidate of outstanding achievement in the Program in Jewish Teacher Education practicum courses.

Cornerstone Leadership in Action (±)

The introduction of the Cornerstone Leadership in Action Award to the Faculty of Education's graduating teachers will ensure we are able to recognize those students those students who have demonstrated exceptional leadership potential or ability and who embrace attributes such as honesty, integrity, passion, enthusiasm, innovation, creativity, courage, humility, trustworthiness. The Cornerstone Leader best embodies the following: Has an exemplary reputation among peers, supervisors, faculty members and within relevant communities; Employs innovative teaching practices; Promotes a positive school culture; Has the capacity to foster leadership qualities in others; Works effectively with families and community members; Supports the concept of mentorship, in relation to peers and students; Believes in continuing professional education; Has demonstrated standards of excellence in his/her professional activities.

There will be two awards- one for students in the Concurrent program and one for the students in the Consecutive program. Recipients must be a Canadian citizen/permanent resident or protected person, resident of Ontario and demonstrate financial need.

Application: Nominations will be accepted for students graduating from the Faculty of Education who reflect all or some of the parameters detailed above. Nominations will be accepted from faculty members or students. In addition to the nominator's letter (250-500 words), the nomination file should include a sample of the nominee's work (with the nominee's permission) which illustrates his/her qualification for the award.

Faculty of Education Book Prize (±)

Awarded to graduating pre-service candidates who have made outstanding contributions to the good name of the Faculty of Education. Course Directors will nominate students.

Marion Perry Book Prize (±)

The Marion Perry Book Prize is intended to recognize a graduating Consecutive program teacher candidate. All graduating students in the Consecutive program will be eligible. The Book Prize will be awarded at the June convocation to the student who has shown the most outstanding qualities in scholarship, teaching ability and character throughout the year.

Application: Course Directors will nominate potential teacher candidates.

O.E.C.T.A Award (±)

Established in 1987, the O.E.C.T.A. Award is awarded on the basis of professional and academic excellence, and is open to all candidates graduating from their third year of the Pre-Service program who have completed ED/EDUC 30000 3.0, Teaching Religious Education in the Roman Catholic Separate Schools. This award was established by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association.
A second award is available for candidates graduating from the Consecutive program. To receive this award, teacher candidates must be recommended by a course director from the York University Faculty of Education.

Patricia Harvey Memorial Scholarship (±)

The Patricia E. Harvey Memorial Scholarship was established by friends, colleagues and candidates to commemorate a professor of outstanding quality. The scholarship, the most distinguished offered in the Faculty of Education, is awarded on the basis of professional and academic excellence and is open to all candidates graduating from third year of the pre-service concurrent program. The successful candidate will have a minimum grade point average of 6.0 in their academic faculty and a minimum grade point average of 7.0 in the Faculty of Education. The value of the scholarship equals the interest derived from an initial principal and the Faculty reserves the right not to award a scholarship every year. Course Directors will nominate potential teacher candidates.

Robert M. Brooks Award OSSTF (±)

The OSSTF/FEESO Faculty of Education Award, valued at $1,000 annually, shall be awarded to the graduating Intermediate/Senior or Technological Studies Teacher Candidate who applies for the award and who in the opinion of his/her Faculty of Education's Awards Committee has shown a clear understanding and empathy for the values of unionism, is attempting to secure a job with a public secondary board, and who best exemplifies the criteria below:

The Teacher Candidate to be selected for the OSSTF/FEESO Faculty of Education Award (listed in order of importance, #1 being most important):

  1. has demonstrated political or social activism that promotes the professional nature of teaching
  2. is an advocate for unionism and related values
  3. has shown leadership by supporting and advocating for fellow Teacher Candidates
  4. has shown leadership in organization of events which benefit fellow Teacher Candidates
  5. has demonstrated a high degree of professional competence
  6. is attempting to secure a teaching position that would make her or him an OSSTF/FEESO member.

Application: Teacher Candidates must apply for the award using the OSSTF/FEESO Faculty of Education Award Application Form. The form must be submitted to the Awards Committee of the Faculty of Education. The Awards Committee of the Faculty of Education will select the Award Recipient from among the applications received.

Shoshana Kurtz Book Prize (±)

This annual award of $80.00 endowed by the Toronto Board of Jewish Education in recognition of Dr. Kurtz's outstanding contribution to Jewish Education will be made to a graduating teacher candidate in the Program in Jewish Teacher Education for academic performance and professional promise. No application necessary.
