The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario makes available numerous scholarships and bursaries to students enrolled in Ontario’s publicly funded schools and faculties of education. These scholarships and bursaries are available to students enrolled in either undergraduate or graduate work at a faculty/school of education.

Aboriginal Women in Education Bursaries - Women's Program (±)

ETFO offers this bursary annually to Aboriginal women who are entering a publicly funded faculty of education or ETFO Aboriginal women members who are taking a qualification/upgrading course at a publicly funded university/institution. Up to four bursaries of up to $1,250 and a certificate of recognition may be granted. This award is not intended to support a master’s or doctorate program.

Bursaries – Designated Groups (±)

ETFO offers up to four bursaries annually to members of designated groups who are entering a faculty of education at a publicly funded university/institution or ETFO members of designated groups who are taking a qualification/upgrading course at a publicly funded university/institution. Up to four bursaries of up to $1,250 and a certificate of recognition may be granted. This award is not intended to support a master’s or doctorate program.

Faculty of Education Award (±)

This award is for a student at the faculty/school of education during the actual year of their teacher training. The award recipient will receive a bursary of $500 from ETFO. This award is open to any student enrolled in the faculty/school of education who is not currently receiving another ETFO scholarship or bursary. The faculty/school of education is to select the candidate who, in their opinion, best meets the criteria set by the ETFO Executive. The criteria for this award are as follows:

  1. The recipient is enrolled full-time in an Ontario faculty of education and registered in a bachelor of education primary/junior or junior/intermediate program.
  2. The recipient demonstrates academic excellence in bachelor of education courses.
  3. The recipient demonstrates exemplary teaching practices in practicum placements.
  4. The recipient demonstrates initiative to broaden personal experience in educational culture. Some possible indicators of this are (not all are required):
    • leadership in student government at faculty of education;
    • support for fellow teacher candidates;
    • provincial/local ETFO involvement;
    • leadership in events which benefit fellow teacher candidates; and
    • exemplary interactions with students in a variety of educational settings.
  5. The recipient demonstrates a commitment to social justice and equity that is in keeping with ETFO policy.
  6. The recipient is recommended by both the practicum supervisor and an associate teacher, in writing, outlining how, in their opinion, the candidate meets the above criteria.
