Bachelor of Education French

Bachelor of Education French

The BEd (French) degree was launched in Fall 2007 and is designed to prepare teacher candidates to teach in French immersion classrooms. This is in collaboration with Glendon College and aims to prepare future French immersion teachers at the Primary/Junior, Junior/Intermediate and Intermediate/Senior levels. The teaching subject for Junior/Intermediate and one of the two teaching subjects for Intermediate/Senior must be French. This would also be an ideal program for Concurrent and Part-Time Consecutive candidates who would be interested in core and extended French. Upon successful completion of the program, graduates are recommended to the Ontario College of Teachers for the Ontario Certificate of Qualification and an Additional Qualification for French as a Second Language, Part 1.

Most courses are at the Glendon campus; however, Education electives, teaching subjects and other required courses may take place at the Keele campus and are taught in English. Considerable emphasis in the program is placed on ensuring excellent French language proficiency and a deep understanding of francophone cultures. To satisfy the Francophone cultural component (see approved Francophone culture courses) of the program, teacher candidates will participate in a one-year study program in a Francophone context while on a stop out from the Faculty of Education, or teacher candidates will enrol in two full course equivalents (12 credits) in Francophone culture courses. A significant proportion of the practicum is carried out in Ontario French Immersion schools. Candidates also have experiences in English language classrooms.

Admission Requirements

All applicants to the BEd French degree also will be assessed on their French proficiency (written and oral) at the time of their interviews. Selection is based on grade point average, successful completion of a French oral and written placement test, related experience, a personal statement, two letters of reference, and an interview conducted in both English and French.
